Research Symposium

May 5, 2017

Join national leaders in medicine, nursing, patient advocacy, public health and policy to continue building the movement for a health care system that exists for the benefit of patients, communities and society. Learn about the epidemic of overuse and under-use and how you can advocate for the transformative change in the health care system that we all want and need.

Abstracts are being sought for the special research symposium, which kicks off the conference.  The organisers are interested in abstracts presenting original data addressing aspects of right care, including:

    • Prevalence and drivers of overuse and underuse (and its relation to resource settings)
    • Harms of overuse (physical, psychological or system-related)
    • Shared decision making and patient-reported outcomes
    • Areas of concurrent underuse and overuse
    • Overuse in the care of the elderly and at end of life
    • Oversupply of providers (e.g. hospitals, physicians, etc.) and technologies (e.g. imaging, surgery centers, etc.)
    • Organizational factors (such as structure and culture) that drive overuse and underuse
    • Professional education research
    • Qualitative research and evaluations of interventions to redress overuse or foster de-implementation, including quality improvement initiatives
    • Use of innovative sources of data and/or new measures for assessing or intervening on overuse (e.g. electronic or personal health records, m-health generated data, patient reported outcomes, etc.)

For more about submitting an abstract, click here.

The deadline for submission is December 18, 2016. Abstracts should include an introduction, methods, results and discussion and are limited to no more than 300 words and one figure or table. Examples of abstracts can be found beginning on page 13 of the 2016 Lown Annual Conference Research Day Abstracts.

Submissions will be reviewed for acceptance for any of the three categories: oral presentation, poster presentation, and abstract slam. Abstracts presented during the abstract slam and oral presentations will be eligible for awards, including best overall abstract, best abstract by a student or trainee, and audience choice.
