About the opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine and Health is the largest faculty in the University, and contains seven academic schools: Sydney Medical School, Sydney Dental School, Sydney School of Health Sciences (from Jan 2020), School of Medical Sciences, Sydney Nursing School, Sydney Pharmacy School and Sydney School of Public Health. The School of Medical Sciences is a research-intensive group of disciplines comprising anatomy and histology, pathology, pharmacology and physiology. The school produces high-impact research across a range of biomedical fields and contributes to courses in medicine, science, dentistry and pharmacy. The faculty has identified Digital Health and Health Service Informatics as a strategic area of development, and have established within the school a new Discipline of Biomedical Informatics and Digital Health.
We are seeking to appoint an outstanding senior academic as Professor of Biomedical Informatics and Digital Health who will be responsible for the operation and ongoing development of the new discipline. The position provides academic leadership across the full spectrum of biomedical informatics research, from bioinformatics to population informatics and health service informatics research, and across all levels of health informatics education, from undergraduate health students to executive training. The position will also expand the frontiers of biomedical informatics while keeping grounded in the needs of the health system that strives to improve the health of our communities.
Improving health service delivery by harnessing the advances in biomedical informatics requires strong collaborative ties to our local, state and national partners. To achieve this ambition, we are seeking applications from candidates with a distinguished record of accomplishment and an ability to engage the profession, the community, as well as regulators and funders, to exploit the potential of data for health and wellbeing.
This new position is an exciting opportunity to shape a core element of the strategic plan for the Faculty of Medicine and Health. The successful applicant will have an academic track record of international excellence as demonstrated by their record of publications, grants and interactions with various stakeholders. The successful applicant will bring an analytical understanding of bioinformatics, biomedical research, clinical and population informatics and how data and data analytics can best be used to improve health and healthcare. The successful applicant will be expected to engage across the wide-landscape of informatics stretching from omics datasets to pathology data to routine healthcare and social wellbeing data. The successful applicant will also be a broadly informed leader with the ability to build and sustain a multidisciplinary team.
The successful applicant must have a wide network of established relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders, that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the school, faculty and University.

Term and remuneration
The position is offered on a fixed-term basis initially for up to 5 years, subject to completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package.
