New UK NIHR Health Services Research Programme announced
Health Services Research funding in the United Kingdon has received a boost with announcement by the UK Public Health Minister of a new £5 million research programme which is intended to lead to an increase in service quality and patient safety through better ways of planning and providing health services.
The new Health Services Research (HSR) programme will provide funding across the UK for a broader range of health services research than is already covered by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) programmes. These include the Health Technology Assessment programme (HTA), the Service Delivery & Organisation programme (SDO), the Efficacy & Mechanism Evaluation programme (EME), Programme Grants for Applied Research and the Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) programme.
These programmes are all specialist sub-sets in the field of health services research, which means that some projects may be difficult to fund because they fall outside of established NIHR funding streams, as well as those covered by the Medical Research Council and the Department of Health.
The HSR programme will fund research mainly through a researcher-led workstream, whereby grants are provided for both primary and evidence synthesis on topics proposed directly by researchers, on an ongoing basis. The programme may also advertise calls for research proposals on specific topics. The first call for expressions of interest will be taking place in January 2009. <<more information>>
NHMRC Academy
NHMRC is providing an opportunity for distinguished researchers to join the organisation in a vital advisory role.
From the 2009 funding round onwards, NHMRC will appoint a group of eminent researchers to the NHMRC Academy to help us with our peer review processes. They anticipate the tasks performed by the Academy will, over a year, amount to about four weeks of full-time commitment. NHMRC will offer each member of the Academy, through their employing institution, a supplementary grant payment of up to $10,000 to allow their research activities to be supported during the period.
NHMRC is writing to all administering institutions' Deputy Vice-Chancellors of Research, Directors and Research Administration Offices asking that the letter and accompanying information be distributed widely in their organisation.
Applications for appointment as a member of the NHMRC Academy must reach NHMRC by 4 November 2008.
NHMRC Partnership Centres for Research Excellence
NHMRC Partnership funding aims to develop more effective connections between the evidence from research and the decision makers who design policy. Centres for Research Excellence will also be funded under this initiative. The centres will develop research capacity in areas of priority for NHMRC and one or more partner policy agencies, but will not be focused on a particular health issue.
NHMRC is calling for comments on the final design of the centres’ funding process. Further information on how to submit your comments can be found at the NHMRC website.
