Project Description

Townsville Hospital and Health Service

Townsville Hospital and Health Service (HHS) is an emerging force in research for which a high level of infrastructure support has been provided. Townsville HHS is home to the Townsville Institute of Health Research and Innovation and is a founding partner in northern Australia’s only NHMRC endorsed research translation centre – Tropical Australia Academic Health Centre. Within the boundaries of Townsville HHS is the Townsville University Hospital TUH), the only tertiary hospital north of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. TUH services an approximate population of 650,000, across a vast geographic catchment and consisting of a diverse population with approximately 8% identifying as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

Within the Townsville Institute of Health Research and Innovation (TIHRI), there is an emerging group of health service researchers comprised predominantly of allied health professionals. The research-active allied health clinicians have established a strong working relationship and have set a strategic aim to unify allied health research and build research capacity and capability in health services research. The aim of allied health researchers at Townsville HHS is to improve access to health care, derive efficiencies in service delivery and improve patient outcomes for people of northern Queensland.
